Right - That's ok, it still will help to troubleshoot what is blocking the game from opening. Origin will tell you you're not connected to the Internet; that's fine, we're just testing. If you click through the "error" messages, SimCity should open. If it does, you should get to the opening menu.

If you can open SimCity normally after a clean boot, then you can find which program is blocking it. It is a pain! Enable a few programs at a time, reboot normally and try SimCity again. Keep enabling a few programs at a time > reboot > try SimCity. Eventually the program will stop launching, so you know that one of the last few programs you enabled is the problem. Then narrow down from there.

For example, you enable 5 programs in the startup list and when you reboot, SimCity hangs on launch. Go back in to the startup list, uncheck one of the 5, reboot and check again. Do this until SimCity launches again. Whichever program you unchecked last is the culprit. Then you will want to leave just that one unchecked and check all the others again. Microsoft help explains it a little better, I think: *Edit - having problems getting the right link to it. Scroll down on the page https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows to the part that says "How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot" and follow the steps.

If you find a program that is blocking SimCity from launching, please reply back so we all will know what was causing the problem.

I'm sorry, I know it sounds like a lot. If you feel better later, at least try opening SimCity after a clean boot. If it works, you can play offline without the troubleshooting part.

If you change your mind, post back. I'll try to help with easier steps.

Yes, it was quite interesting. I kept a few different buildings remained as well, just to test my theory. Also, I currently have about 6 HD, 4 MD and 1 LD commercial building and I added all those numbers mentioned together and the population panel had the correct shopping available.

Each time a new HD commercial building is completed, I check the population panel and confirm that another 600 jobs are available for LD residential workers.

I can tell that you like to keep your eye on population numbers as well, so just for your benefit, sometimes the population panel numbers change as soon as the foundation of a new building is laid. Sometimes, it waits until the building is 100%. Freight calculations for example, are added immediately, even though the Industrial building is but a foundation.

The zoning tip definitely worked, and really well too! So many pedestrians. Large smile

If you still have the available space, I have found that for Tourist heavy Cities it is beneficial to keep the resident Sims traffic separate from the Visitors.

I have a Casino City (not yet developed) but have all the resident Sims roads networked around the Highway entry point.

Once I have the available funds, I will select Highway and draw a long road from the Region connection, underground and connect up my City coast-line where I intend for the entire coast-line to be a Casino haven.

I believe this will keep the resident Sims traversing their own network and the visiting Sims will hit the Highway all the way to the coast-line.

Hi ! I thought I posted an answer to this question - must have been in some alternate SIMulation world, because I can't find any part of it! Transportation - of everything in the game, this is probably the biggest issue. Part of the answer is - that's a big part of the game. Part of the issue is - poor pathing and strange transportation bugs will absolutely plague your city, with no other option than to either learn to live with them or minimize as much as possible.

Overall, remember that SimCity is utilizing an agent pathing program that is rather flawed in the simulation. A particular Sim does not choose a particular job or building to go to every day; workers will exit their building and follow the path of least resistance until they find an open job. This can lead to weird things like Sims waiting at a bus stop that's set right outside their door, jumping on the bus and exiting at the next stop. If there's no employment at the next stop, they'll just wait at that stop for the bus to pick them up and carry them to the next one. If this is at the end of a road, for instance, they can spend all day going back and forth between two bus stops, never finding the industrial area that is on the other side of the city.

Some tips and tricks - try a few suggestions and see how it works for you:

Try setting your roads with as few 4-way stops as possible. L-shaped or T-shaped intersections make for much better traffic flow.

In every case, try to build so that Sims have to walk rather than drive or use mass transportation. Aim for an RCI ratio of about 3:1:1. Build residential zones with the commercial mixed in; R on the ends with a section of C in the middle works very well.

Build dorms for your university and lay paths to the main building so the students walk to school. As far as these paths go, you can use them all over the city and all sims will use them. They're free to lay and give your Sims walking options, so use them! (Also helpful - garbage trucks will use service roads and avoid mucking up traffic if you lay them around the city as well) If you have a university, do not place any other school building types or school bus stops. There is no distinction between elementary school students and university students. All of the student agents are just "students". It's cheaper and better management in the long run to build multiple schools (whatever type you're using) placed around the city so that students will walk to school. University students will will either walk (good) or drive (horrible traffic) to school. They do not use public transportation. Use the dorms to fill your classes so you don't have regional "students" flooding in and mucking up your roads.

Bus terminals, trains, planes and boats - all are "regional" traffic. They'll bring in tourists and possibly carry off some of your unemployed sims, who will never find their way back. If you are running anything besides a tourist or gambling city, I would recommend that you demolish the bus terminals (turn them off and wait at least a full sim-day to make sure the buses get back to the garage before you bulldoze it). If you need the tourists for an area, set the bus terminal or ferry by the casino or landmark and don't use any bus stops or buses. This will force your tourists to walk right to the landmark and leave by the transportation method. If you don't do this, when they leave they will generate hundreds of taxis to take them out of the city. Think of regional transport as bringing sims in - they do not help with city traffic flow or resident transport.

In cases where you need transport for your city Sims, use shuttle buses, streetcars and park-n-rides. I usually have my Industrial set on the downwind side of the city, and the Residential and Commercial together on the other side. It works great to have shuttle bus stops and park-n-rides right in the center of each area, maybe a streetcar avenue down the center of the city. Only put stops right where you want the sims to go. So a line of Industrial buildings with a shuttle bus stop in the center, and park-n-rides on either side, that sort of thing. It seems counter intuitive, but the less stops scattered about, the better. Place them with intent and purpose, and they will work well.

Try to create "straight shots" for anything that has to either enter the city or exit the city. This means trade depots set very close to the city entrance in order to get your goods exported or imported as quickly as possible; try having an L-shaped road at your entrance with a straight shot to trade depot.

Also, I'm a big fan and user of the population tabs and utilize it often to figure out what the sims are doing and what they need. However, sometimes the numbers don't seem to be corresponding with what's going on. In that case, it's very useful to use the Extended Data Worker mod. There are a couple of bugs that happen fairly reliably; student agents go missing (especially with universities) and the only way to get them back is to demolish the building and let it rebuild. Worker and shopper agents may also disappear, usually exiting to the region for something, never to return. Again, demolishing the building is sometimes your only resort.

If you utilize any of these tips, of course remember to give the city a few Sim-days before you evaluate the effectiveness. Tweaking traffic is an ongoing, detailed part of the game and it takes a while to see the effects of a change.

Really hope some of these tips help. Happy building!

Hey!

I have another Region related question.

I have just recently started work on a Great Work Standard smile

So, each day at 0600 hours and again at 1800 hours, a few dozen cars leave their place of residence and travel through the City and out along the Highway. These cars are all workers and if selected, tell me that they're "going to work at the Great Work".

There do appear to be workers returning as well.

If I look at the Population tab, there are NO commuting workers.

Who are these workers and why does it not contribute to commuting?

Secondly, once the Great Work is built it'll be the first GW I've ever fully constructed. Large smile

However, will the GW actually work as intended? I have selected Solar Farm so hope that it just provides my Region with untold power.

Re: Regional Sharing

Congratulations on your Great Work! Such a great feeling to get something that substantial under construction. Solar farm was the first one I ever built, too, and I was very happy with it. I've built solar farm a couple of times, and they always worked great for me. Gotta love lots of clean power!

Been a while since I constructed any GW, but I think the numbers reported are part of that whole disconnect between regional view and city view numbers. The last couple I've built have been Arcologies and once they're built it is a nightmare trying to figure out what is actually coming in to the city. The city population data map will show commuters from the "region" - sometimes - but the regional map never shows anything coming from or going to the arcology. This is, of course, the opposite of what you're seeing during building.

The likeliest answer is - this is another one of those things that drive data crunchers crazy. The good news is you only have to make sure you have the correct number of "unemployed" or "commuting" workers to keep it running and hope you can concentrate your attentions elsewhere so it doesn't drive you mad.

Just wanted to tell you one "gotchya" in building GW.

You can create a horrible problem if you go to another connected city and click "build" after you've already started building from a different city. It's all about the regional synch. I usually use one city to build the GW just to avoid the issue. If you go to another city during construction or after it's built, don't panic if you don't see the GW from there. Give it some time. Eventually, you'll get notice that the GW has started and it will run through all the steps of building and you will be asked to do the ribbon cutting in the new city.

Whatever you do, do NOT confuse the server by clicking the build button in the other cities. If you do, when the game finally catches up, it will completely hose your entire region; there is no fix. So, safest way is to build the GW from one city, wait until it's completely finished and you've had the ribbon cutting ceremony, then load each of the other connected cities and wait for it recognize the GW. Go through the ribbon cutting ceremony on each, and you'll have all that solar power streaming to each of those cities.

Thank you for this.

I actually did go in to another connected City and was concerned to see that, not only was the GW progress not registered, that the GW hadn't even started yet!

However, given my knowledge of Region sync, I decided to wait a few game hours and the GW did update itself.

Am I not able to ask each City to contribute something? I've started a second GW in another Region and have one City contributing Oil but I want a second City to contribute Alloy as the first City doesn't produce Alloy.

So glad you had the foresight to wait for the synch - after all you've gone through with this region, it would have been catastrophic if this bug shut it all down!

It will be a bit of a chore, but I've contributed from more than one city successfully. I think the "safest" way would be to let the first city contribute everything it's going to supply, that way you can wait for the synch in the second city to show all of that resource supplied.

If you want to be really cautious, you could also gift the resources from the second city to the first, so that there's only one city doing the actual building. Either way, it's about waiting for the regional synching.

Hi  - It sounds like you're having issues getting SimCity to launch? I'll be happy to help if I can, but need some more information to know what's happening. It would be easier if you started your own post, but if you'd rather reply here, that's ok too. Did the game download in Origin? What happens when you click "play"? What kind of computer are using - Windows 10 or Mac? Do you get any error messages?

Here are a couple of things that you should try first:

  1. Exit Origin, Reboot your computer, then try again. Sometimes things just need to be cleared out.
  2. Run SimCity and Origin "As Administrator" - Right-click the shortcut on your desktop and choose "Properties", then click on the tab at the top that says "Compatibility". Put a check at the bottom where it says "Run this program as an Administrator" and then click "OK" at the bottom. When you go to run the game, there will be a popup that says something like "this game will make changes to your computer" - don't worry, just click ok. That's a warning from Windows whenever you run something as administrator.
  3. Try uninstalling and reinstalling Origin - an easy way to do this is to click the windows button in the bottom left of your screen, then right-click the Origin shortcut. The menu will show the option to uninstall; just click that and follow the prompts. Then reboot your computer, install Origin again (always "As Administrator") and try SimCity again.
  4. In Origin, right-click the SimCity icon and choose "Game Properties". Uncheck the box that says "Enable Origin in game"

Hope this helps! Happy Building!

If I gift the resources, is it true that I will need the relevant trading at the Trade Depot?

So, the problem City now has a population of 216K and there are next to no traffic problems.

There are a few hundred students travelling at 6AM which can clog the roads up a bit, but these mostly disperse by about 8AM.

I accidentally placed my Fire Station incorrectly, resulting in a strange journey from its garage to any fire in the City so lost a couple of buildings before I realised, but other than that...

THANK YOU!!!!
